Birthdays

A friend of my just had a birthday, it was her 50th and she said she did not want to celebrate it. I think that is sad. Yes 50 is what we tend to think of as old, specially when we were younger. I'm 47 to be 48 this year. I was talking with my boyfriend and he said something about something being age appropriate. I told him to not say that, because what is really age appropriate?

I am firmly in the camp of "age is just a number." And with medical discoveries happening every day 50 could be just the start of middle age.

Your birthday should be a very special day. No matter the age. It is the day you graced the earth with your wonderful person. Everyone of us adds something to this planet, hopefully it is all good, so we need to let ourselves be celebrated if only for that one day a year.

Kids love birthdays, I always let my kids pick their favorite dinner and I'd make a cake and we all get together and have a lot of fun. I think, even as adults we need to adapt a child's perspective regarding birthdays. Maybe we don't get as many presents as we used to, but if someone wants to do something for you, say yes. If someones tell you happy birthday, say thank you and accept it happily. When someone says happy birthday to you it is their way of saying they are glad you are on this earth.

Life has such a way of getting in the way, we each deserve at least one day a year to make it all ours. If I were an employer it would be a paid day off or I'd make a point of taking them out to lunch. Everyone needs to know, if only for that day - but hopefully everyday of the year, but especially that day - they are primo number one.

Don't let a birthday get you down. Look at it as a celebration of another year alive and definitely with celebrating. My boyfriend is very cool, he gives me at least a birthday weekend, if not the whole week. He makes a point of making me feel special and I try and do the same for him.

Birthdays are a time for us to look back and see what was so good about the past year and to look forward and see what we'd like to improve on for the coming year. I know most do it on New Year's, but I think, for me, birthdays are better. It's like a fiscal year in business.

So if your birthday is coming up, and you are regretting it, stop that right now. The world is a better place because you are in it. Take those words to heart and celebrate you!
