Everyone usually waits until the day of the holiday to write about that holiday so I decided to get a jump on everyone else. When this day comes around I always think of my Dad. He had two tours in Vietnam. Then this year I watched Band of Brothers about World War II in Europe and the Pacific about World War II in and around Japan. In the beginning of the shows they talk to Veterans. It touched me. I so admire those men and women who made the decision to risk their lives to assure we keep what we have here in America. Now that is a whole other subject that is very sensitive to me, but that does not make me appreciate any less the fact what those people went through and what they had to do. I know in my heart and soul I could never do it.
Then they have to come home and forget all they were taught and all they lived through. It is absolutely irresponsible of us that we have so many Vets needing help and not getting it. They were taught a way of life so against the normal grain, then they are forgotten. What kind of thank you is that?
There is a website called www.anysoldier.com. It enables a person to send necessary items to our soldiers. If you go to the web site you will be able to find a base or area to send comfort items to. If you address the box to: any soldier or any female soldier (if it has female items in it) the post will make sure it gets to a soldier that doesn't get much mail. And if you get an APO/AFO box from the post office it is about 12 dollars. A small price to pay, to gift someone going through what they are.
I know times are tight, but chances are you aren't living in a tent and worried that a bomb might go off and kill you or your friends. We need to keep these men and women in our prayers and our thoughts always. They are risking their lives for us and what we believe in.
Before I get even further on my soap box let me add this personal note to my Dad, Thank you Dad for all you did for America in Vietnam. Because of you and your fellow soldiers I have the freedoms I do.
So tomorrow during your day, take a couple of moments and say thank you, if only in your thoughts to those that have fought and those that have died for us. They deserve it and much more.
